Noah Wyle: Yes, it’s sort of a typical story telling in the sense that we don’t start with everyday life going on business as usual and then suddenly everybody’s eyes turn to the heavens and say, what’s that coming in towards our planet.
We do, we pick up six months into what has been a devastating alien invasion and meet our characters already in a pretty high state of disarray which is kind of exciting storytelling because it allows you the opportunity to fill in the back story through episodic storytelling and also opens up the possibility of being able to track back in time down the road if it seems (dramatically) appropriate.
"TNT presented some new footage from their upcoming sci-fi series Falling Skies today to fans at WonderCon, and we were there to cover it. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the series stars Noah Wyle as a former university professor and father who has taken up the leadership role in a resistance faction made up of soldiers and civilians alike. In addition to Wyle, Falling Skies also stars Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, and Drew Roy. Hit the jump to check out a recap on the footage and panel, as well as my reaction to what we were shown.
Showrunner Mark Verheiden, star Drew Roy and writer Melinda Hsu appeared on the panel and they showed four clips in all." Read More

"Finally there was a panel for the show where the first trailer was unveiled. Much of the trailer focused on a little girl talking about and drawing descriptions of the alien ships that invaded her home. We also see shots of the resistance team as they avoid and then finally fight the invading forces. Cuts were quick so it didn’t include a clear view of the aliens but they appeared to be large, mobile, and arriving from ships. Combat looked frenetic but also sometimes avoidable as much of the action included people running away. The trailer was brief so it was hard to judge quality but a War of the Worlds influence was easily felt, as was the human element described in the interviews.
Finally, the cast and creative team discussed the show and mentioned how Moon Bloodgood’s character is much less of a fighter at the beginning of the show and slowly grows into it. Wyle’s character is in more a leader role and takes this very seriously but both actors hinted that a relationship between to the two is a very likely occurrence."

JULY 22ND, SAN DIEGO, CA–TNT is teaming up with publisher Dark Horse Comics to create a comic book and webcomic prequel to FALLING SKIES, the eagerly anticipated new series starring Noah Wyle (ER, TNT’s The Librarian movies) and produced by DreamWorks Television and executive producer Steven Spielberg. The comic book and webcomic are slated to be unveiled at New York Comic Con in October. FALLING SKIES, which is set to premiere on TNT in summer 2011, is a gripping drama that envisions a world where aliens have invaded, and the fate of humanity lies in the hands of a few survivors.
During New York Comic Con (Oct. 8-10), TNT and Dark Horse will distribute an exclusive, special-edition 12-14 page comic book that tells the harrowing backstory of the alien invasion. Beginning Nov. 1, fans will be able to download an extended webcomic version through tnt.tv, darkhorse.com and iTunes, with new installments posted every two weeks.
“The FALLING SKIES comic book and webcomic provide a great way for TNT to ramp up excitement for FALLING SKIES, while also providing a thrilling backstory to the series’ intriguing premise and characters,” said Tricia Melton, senior vice president of entertainment marketing for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “We look forward to working with Dark Horse Comics as we begin the FALLING SKIES invasion.”
In addition to the comic book and webcomic, Dark Horse is collaborating with TNT on the FALLING SKIES presence at this month’s Comic-Con International in San Diego. The event will include appearances and autograph sessions with series stars Wyle and Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation), along with co-executive producer and writer Mark Verheiden (Heroes, Battlestar Galactica). On Friday, July 23, from 2-3 p.m. (PT), the three will appear at Dark Horse’s Comic-Con International booth, where they will sign exclusive FALLING SKIES posters. Then from 4:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. (PT), Wyle, Bloodgood and Verheiden will participate in a Q&A panel session in Room 6A.
In FALLING SKIES, Wyle stars as a former college professor who becomes the leader of a group of soldiers and civilians struggling against an occupying alien force. Bloodgood co-stars as Anne Glass, a therapist who works with the surviving children to help them cope with the traumatic situation. The series also stars Drew Roy (Lincoln Heights) as Hal and Maxim Knight (Brothers & Sisters) as Matt, Tom’s two sons; and Seychelle Gabriel (Weeds) as Lourdes, an orphaned teenager who helps run the group’s commissary. Will Patton (Armageddon, TNT’s Into the West) plays a fierce leader of the resistance.
FALLING SKIES is executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, along with DreamWorks Television heads Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank and screenwriter Robert Rodat. Rodat, who earned an Oscar® nomination for his screenplay for Saving Private Ryan, wrote the pilot from an idea he co-conceived with Spielberg. Verheiden and Greg Beeman (Heroes, Smallville) are co-executive producers. The pilot was directed by Carl Franklin (One False Move, Out of Time).

TNT gives sneak of Spielberg’s ‘Falling Skies’
by James Hibberd
TNT's mysterious alien invasion drama produced by Steven Spielberg became a lot less mysterious by the end of its Comic-Con panel.
"Falling Skies" looks pretty ... familiar. Earth is attacked by bad guys from outer space, 80% of the population is destroyed, a ragtag group of survivors fight back.
One storytelling item: We won't see the invasion itself (TNT has money ... but not that much money), but instead the story will begin in the aftermath. The show uses kids' drawings to depict what happened which, as low-cost solutions to showing the end of the world go, is a pretty neat one.
TNT promised "Skies" will be the "Television Event of 2011," so it's setting the bar pretty high.
"These become the architects of the next Constitution," said star Noah Wylie, bearded. "If we had something hit the reset button what are the aspects we'd want to retain from the life before?"
As for what the aliens want, exec prod Mark Verheiden said, "We know what they want, and we're not going to tell you."

Comic-Con: 'The Cape,' 'Teen Wolf,' 'Falling Skies' and the great unknown
by Alan Sepinwall.
"Falling Skies": This is probably the highest-profile of the three, in that it's produced by Steven Spielberg ("BSG" vet Mark Verheiden is the active showrunner), stars Noah Wyle and Moon Bloodgood, is about the aftermath of an alien invasion of Earth and will no doubt get a huge promotional push from TNT when it launches next June.
It also got the most enthusiastic response of the three - still modest compared to "Walking Dead" (or even "Hawaii Five-0"), but clearly positive. It helped that we only got a sizzle reel, which means they could cut together the best footage from the pilot (including several glimpses of celebrity boot camp maestro and sometime-actor Dale Dye) without having to pause for exposition or characterization.
The series picks up six months after aliens have taken over Earth for reasons unknown. Wyle plays a suddenly-widowed Boston University history professor who finds himself leading a resistance cell (and frequently talking about the American Revolution), while Bloodgood is a pediatrician who lost her husband and daughter in the invasion.
Verheiden liked the idea of picking up well after the invasion itself (which is the period most of these stories take place in), because, "Our people are trying to catch up as much as the audience will be."
There were a few good laugh lines from the panel - Bloodgood at one point said, "I've always thought of myself as a masculine person," and, when asked whom she would most want on her side against an alien invasion, suggested, "Samuel L. Jackson" - and Verheiden and Wyle sounded smart in discussing ways in which the show will be different from the dozens of similar movies and TV shows, and the crowd (a packed room after the sparseness of "Teen Wolf") seemed pleased at the conclusion.
