Where Is The Falling Skies News?

In our most recent podcast episode posted 02/19, we discussed the lack of Falling Skies news over this long hiatus.  Many of our listeners chimed in via Facebook and twitter, about what they thought TNT should be doing to maintain interest in the show over these extended breaks of approximately ten months.

Most of the suggestions centered around longer seasons, more behind the scenes or other videos, and more interaction with the fans via social networks.  Many of us felt that TNT did a better job engaging fans between the first and second season, and even then, their ratings still dropped by a significant amount.  Perhaps TNT felt that spent too much time or payroll on attempting to utilize the social media outlets via the last hiatus without the desired results.

I took a look of the ratings for season one and season two over at Wikipedia.  The second season saw a 21.76% drop in ratings, that's 1.042 million less viewers per episode.  The average ratings for the ten episodes of season one was 4.788 million viewers, while the average ratings of the ten episodes of season two was 3.746 million viewers.  If the ratings decline in a similar fashion for season 3, the average would be down to 2.93 million viewers per episode.

Since 2013 began, the Falling Skies Facebook Page and FallingSkiesTNT on twitter have posted a few questions about previous seasons, a few pictures,  but no info about the upcoming season three which will probably debut on Father's Day 2013.
The latest update on FallingSkies.com is a blog post from Collin Cunningham from November 1, 2012 where he suggested that we need to know the name Rob Gray, the Falling Skies Production Designer.  The latest update on from Falling Skies producer/director Greg Beeman's website is a blog post from September 30, 2012, where he answers many fan questions.

Drew Roy talks Falling Skies at VES Awards

Drew Roy (Hal Mason) talked briefly about Falling Skies at the Visual Effects Society Awards last week.  Collider posted the short video below of their interview with Roy.  He speaks about Falling Skies Season 3, the casting of Doug Jones, his character, his schedule filming Falling Skies, and more.

At the end of season two finale, we learned that Roy's character, Hal Mason, has an alien implant inside of him which appeared to change his demeanor.  We will have to see if this will have a lasting impact on him and the 2nd Mass.  Tom Mason, Hal's father, had an implant that was removed in season 2, and it did not seem to affect Tom afterwards.

Falling Skies a Game of Risk

During the initial invasion the "mother ships" brought millions of skitters to earth and they quickly killed 90% of the population. This is when some Falling Skies mythos that isn't touch on in the show all that often begins.

Those mother ships and skitters left the planet, presumably to conquer and enslave another world. This is part of the story that has only been mentioned a couple of times. This strategy of bringing a large force and destroying your enemies defenses and leaving a much smaller force to maintain control seems to be basic military strategy. It is also the strategy many use while playing the board game Risk.

These overlords or perhaps their rulers are playing an intergalactic game of domination. From what we've seen on earth, they play this game well.

The new species of alien may bring some Risk cards to the 2nd Mass and provide some much needed reinforcements. If not, the 2nd Mass and the rest of humanity may be wiped off the map.

Falling Skies Season 3 Still Five Months Away

The long hiatus is not as long as it once was, but the first episode of Falling Skies Season 3 entitled "On Thin Ice" is still over five months away.  TNT premiered the first two seasons on Father's Day. This year Father's Day is June 16, 2013, which is currently 157 days away.

Principal photography of Falling Skies season 3 concluded back in December 2012.  The crew will probably spend the next several months of post-production for all of the SFX shots.

TV Veterans Coming to Falling Skies Season 3

Stephen Collins "Benjamin Hathaway"
Falling Skies casting news has been breaking over the past few weeks, and several new faces that are notable TV veterans have been cast for season 3.

TV Guide reported recently that Stephen Collins (7th Heaven) "will appear in the fourth episode of Skies' third season as Benjamin Hathaway, who served as the President of the United States prior to the alien invasion.  The character is described as a confident man exuding charisma who has been forced into combat against the aliens. Stationed in Colorado, he has been sending out sniper teams all over the nation to locate survivors. He wants to meet Tom (Noah Wyle) to see how he and the 2nd Mass have been winning the war against the outer space creatures."

Robert Sean Leonard "Roger Kadar"
Robert Sean Leonard (House) will appear in five episodes.  Deadline reported that Leonard will "play Roger Kadar, PhD, an obsessive but gifted scientist who runs Charleston’s power grid and lives underground with his pet rats. The children of New Charleston, intrigued by his cool science toys and unusual pets, eventually dub him 'The Rat King.'”

Gloria Reuben (ER) will also appear five episodes next season.  Deadline reported that Reuben will "play Marina Perlata, an aide to Wyle’s Tom Mason, who has been one of the leaders from the human resistance movement against an invading alien force. Attractive and a very put together woman, Marina is extremely intelligent and her political knowledge and experience could prove extremely helpful to Tom."

Open Yale University Course- The American Revolution

Interested in learning more about the American Revolution that is mentioned often so much over the course of the first two seasons of Falling Skies?  Thanks to iTunes U and Yale University, you can listen to a fifteen part Open Yale Course on the American Revolution.

The American Revolution - Audio
by Joanne B. Freeman
Description
"The American Revolution entailed some remarkable transformations--converting British colonists into American revolutionaries, and a cluster of colonies into a confederation of states with a common cause -- but it was far more complex and enduring than the fighting of a war. As John Adams put it, "The Revolution was in the Minds of the people... before a drop of blood was drawn at Lexington"--and it continued long past America's victory at Yorktown. This course will examine the Revolution from this broad perspective, tracing the participants' shifting sense of themselves as British subjects, colonial settlers, revolutionaries, and Americans."  http://itunes.apple.com/us/itunes-u/american-revolution-audio/id429260982
