Noah Wyle Talks About Falling Skies - Minor Spoilers

I had the opportunity to be a part of a teleconference with Noah Wyle yesterday. He gave us lots of insights into TNT's Falling Skies.  You can hear the audio from the interview on episode 6 of the Falling Skies Cast.

I was never given the floor from the moderator, but I was able to be a part of a great time with Noah Wyle.  One thing that was not directly addressed, was how deeply Wyle is involved in the decision making process with Falling Skies.  He makes several comments that sounds like he is involved with scripting, story decisions and even what elements should be cut out.

The first question came from Patrick Douglas with Great Falls Tribune.  Who asked Noah to talk about how Falling Skies picks up in the thick of the madness instead of building up to it.

Noah Wyle: Yes, it’s sort of a typical story telling in the sense that we don’t start with everyday life going on business as usual and then suddenly everybody’s eyes turn to the heavens and say, what’s that coming in towards our planet.
We do, we pick up six months into what has been a devastating alien invasion and meet our characters already in a pretty high state of disarray which is kind of exciting storytelling because it allows you the opportunity to fill in the back story through episodic storytelling and also opens up the possibility of being able to track back in time down the road if it seems (dramatically) appropriate.

Remi Aubuchon Joins Falling Skies as Showrunner for Possible Second Season

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that TNT is already thinking ahead and may be planning an early pick-up for a season two of Falling Skies; however, the final decision will not be made until after Falling Skies premieres next month.  Due the lengthy production process, TNT and DreamWorks TV have apparently already hired Remi Aubuchon as executive producer/showrunner for the possible second season.

Aubuchon was Caprica co-creator alongside of Ron Moore.  Aubuchon is also reportedly assembling a new team of staff writers for season two.

From executive producer Steven Spielberg comes TNT’s highly, highly anticipated Falling Skies, which follows a resistance movement born in the ashes of an alien attack that has left most of the world incapacitated. At the center of the movement, dubbed the 2nd Mass because it is headquartered in Boston, is Tom Mason (Noah Wyle), a history professor whose family has been torn apart—his wife killed and one of his three sons captured.Falling Skies is set to premiere on June 19. The Paley Center will preview an episode, followed by a Q&A with the cast and creative team."

Initial Reactions to the First Two Episodes of Faling Skies

I recently received the Falling Skies press kit in the mail. I have had the privilege of watching the two part series opener that will air June 19, 9 pm - 11 pm, and the following episode that will air June 26, from 10 pm - 11 pm (the regular time slot).

I thoroughly enjoyed these first three hours of the show.  I have watched many sci-fi shows and movies and I feel this version of an alien apocalypse is off to a great start and is thus far better than most others in the genre.  In many ways the story is a familiar one; however the team behind Falling Skies has done some amazing things.  This is definitely a different take on the similar story line that you have probably seen elsewhere. There are some twist and turns through this first part of the series.

There are some unanswered questions from the beginning, but we are given most of what we need to know about the events leading up to then series with the opening voice over.

The acting is top notch, even from the child actors.  I think one of the most important aspects of these episodes is that I felt a connection to these characters early on.  The characters are fleshed out, they feel like real people which makes the various dangers they face have added tension.

This show has the look and feel of a major motion picture.  The CGI looks really sharp for a TV show, but is not over used.  The score adds depth to the stunning visuals.

If you are a scI-fi fan or not, I think that you should check out this series.  Many non-horror fans were rewarded with great television by watching the Walking Dead, and I think the same will be true of Falling Skies.  This story takes place during the alien invasion of the earth, but it's really about the characters and their story of survival, much like the Walking Dead.

One small thing that reminded me of the Walking Dead is that different people have different names for the aliens, much like different people had different names for the zombies (walkers and geeks).

I know this article is broad without much details about the storyline. I was instructed in the press kit to be sure not to spoil any of the surprises of the show due to the mysterious nature of Falling Skies. On my site and in my podcasts, I will not seek to spoil anyone on these episodes or for future episodes.  I will post episode titles and official descriptions in the Falling Skies Episode Guide and report them in the podcasts under a spoiler warning, and that will be the extent of any such information.

Thanks,
Jimmy in GA
